HR on Your Terms: Part 2: How to Test Your Business Idea Before Taking the Leap

Let me tell you a secret: I didn’t wake up one day and suddenly quit my corporate job to start my business.
In fact, when I registered HR@Heart Consulting Inc. in 2019, I was still working full-time. But deep down, I knew I was building my exit plan.
The truth is, I didn’t know everything, but I knew enough to get started. And that’s what I want you to take away from this blog:
You can start before you’re ready.
If you’ve ever dreamed of launching your own HR consultancy, coaching practice, or side hustle, this is your sign to test the waters before diving in.
How I Tested My HR Business Idea
Before my corporate exit (thanks, layoff!), I quietly started offering services I loved: coaching, training, and, yes, a bit of recruitment (even though it wasn’t my favourite, shhhh!). I reached out to friends and former colleagues and asked if they needed help with resumes, interview prep, or employee engagement ideas.
Most of the time, I offered these services at a discount or even for free in exchange for testimonials and honest feedback (and because real-world experience >>>> a perfect business plan). That feedback was gold; it helped me understand what people really needed and where I was most valuable.
Three Lessons for Starting Small
1. Start With Who Already Knows (and Trusts) You
No website? No fancy branding? No problem.
Your network is your most powerful asset. Who in your circle could benefit from your expertise today?
2. Feedback Trumps Perfection
I used those early experiences to improve how I delivered my services. Some loved my coaching style; others wanted more structure. Their input shaped my services before I scaled.
3. Keep It Simple - Don't Overthink It
No LLC. No 10-page business plan. Just real value for real people. The rest came later.
Your Challenge (Yes, You!)
If you’re flirting with the idea of an HR side hustle or consultancy, here’s your mission:
What’s one service you could offer to one person this week to test your idea?
A resume review?
A 30-minute career strategy call?
A quick audit of their LinkedIn profile?
Small steps lead to big leaps.
In Part 3, I’ll share how my services evolved and why it’s okay if what you start with isn’t your endgame.
You’ve got this.
Your HR Coach ❤️
