HRforHR: Why HR Professionals Need Their Support System
As HR professionals, we dedicate our careers to supporting and nurturing the workforce within our organizations. We wear multiple hats, manage a multitude of tasks, and often find ourselves on the frontline of addressing employee concerns, conflicts, and crises. Despite our expertise and dedication, we sometimes forget one crucial aspect—the need for HR support for ourselves, which is where HRforHR comes into play.
There are many moments in my HR career where I have asked myself, where is the HRforHR? In 2021, I Googled HRforHR and found nothing. Google is OK with telling us what HR can do for the organization, leaders and employees. Still, it never speaks in reverse about what the organization, leaders and employees can do to support HR.
"no one is coming to save us, so we have to save ourselves."
I have been in the HRforHR space for the last six years, and I must say that I am excited to see more HR professionals take up the mantle of supporting our colleagues. Trust me, as the hidden first responders in the organization, no one is coming to save us, so we have to save ourselves.
What is HRforHR?
HRforHR is a specialized field that provides support, guidance, and development for HR professionals. It's about creating a safe space for those of us who spend our days ensuring others thrive, to reflect, rejuvenate, and grow. This concept extends beyond simple peer support – it involves structured programs, professional coaching, mentorship, and resources tailored specifically to the unique challenges and opportunities we face in our roles.
HRforHR is not just another professional development program. It’s not about teaching us how to do our jobs better in a technical sense. Rather, it addresses our well-being, resilience, and professional satisfaction. It's about recognizing the emotional toll our work can take and providing tools and strategies to manage it effectively. HRforHR is a movement that acknowledges that even the most seasoned HR professionals need a support system.
What HRforHR is Not
HRforHR is not a replacement for traditional HR development programs focused on skill enhancement and technical knowledge. It’s neither a one-size-fits-all solution nor a quick fix for deep-seated professional challenges. HRforHR is not about attending a workshop or seminar and expecting transformative results. Instead, it's an ongoing journey that involves consistent support, reflection, and personal and professional growth.
