The Healing Power of a Hug: A Lesson for HR Professionals

Hugs can heal.
Hugs can heal.

As HR professionals, we often carry the weight of workplace challenges, employee emotions, and the delicate task of balancing people and processes. But who cares for the caregivers?

This question was at the heart of a recent presentation I gave in the UK titled How to Have a Happy, Healthy HR Career. During the session, I asked the audience to do something simple yet profound—hug each other.

Watching the room fill with warmth and connection was a truly beautiful sight. I’ll always cherish the lovely hug I received from Toby Kheng that day.

A Message That Touched My Heart

A few days after the event, I received a LinkedIn message from a gentleman in the audience. He expressed his gratitude for the presentation, particularly the hug segment, saying he didn’t realize how much he needed that hug until then.

His words touched me deeply and reminded me of the incredible and often overlooked power of human connection.

The Science Behind Hugs

Hugs are more than just a gesture of kindness; they’re a tool for healing and connection. Research highlights their incredible impact on our mental and physical health:

🤗 Stress Reduction: Hugs lower cortisol levels, helping to ease stress and tension.

🤗 Emotional Bonding: They release oxytocin, the “love hormone,” which fosters trust and deepens relationships.

🤗 Heart Health: A 20-second hug can lower blood pressure and heart rate, improving cardiovascular health.

🤗 Trauma Release: Hugs create a sense of safety, which can help release stored trauma.

Why Hugs Matter in HR

As HR professionals, we’re often the unsung heroes, providing emotional support to employees while navigating complex workplace dynamics. This role can leave us feeling isolated, drained, or burned out.

A simple hug can make a big difference. It’s a moment of genuine connection that reminds us we’re not alone. Whether it’s a colleague, a friend, or even yourself (yes, self-hugs count!), embracing this simple act can be a powerful step toward healing and self-care.

My Challenge to You

Let’s normalize hugging in HR—not just to comfort others but as a tool for our wellness. Next time you’re with a trusted colleague or friend, take a moment to share a hug. You never know who might need it or how much it could mean.

Sending hugs from your HR Coach ❤️
